Capturing Historic Ambience Without Operational Downtime
Digitizing historic civic spaces and art galleries requires balancing public visitor access with challenging ambient lighting. Salford Museum and Art Gallery presented a technical capture scenario: preserving the dark, atmospheric Victorian street exhibit (Lark Hill Place) alongside expansive gallery halls and a bustling public café.
Execution & Technical Highlights
- Zero-Disruption Staged Schedule: The main art galleries and museum halls were captured out-of-hours while the café remained operational. To ensure zero customer disruption, the café space was captured immediately after doors closed at 4:00 PM.
- Custom Low-Light Photography: Lark Hill Place features authentic, dim Victorian street lighting that standard automatic exposure hardware struggles to resolve. Auxiliary continuous lighting and bracketed HDR exposures were deployed to capture cobblestone textures and storefront details without destroying the historic atmosphere.
- Public Accessibility & Inclusivity: The completed 3D digital twin offers a 24/7 accessible walkthrough for local residents, remote researchers, and visitors with mobility needs or sensory differences—directly supporting municipal inclusion targets and grant funding requirements.
